Overcrowding blamed for deaths of 10 babies at Tembisa Hospital

Overcrowding is being blamed for the deaths of ten infants at Tembisa Hospital. Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku, says the department is also struggling with a shortage of nurses.
Ten babies died during an antibiotic-resistant bacteria outbreak between November and December last year.
Masuku says the bacteria spreads faster when the area is overcrowded.
“It’s a general problem we have in our country and across the province. Because of overcrowding and staff shortage, we face a situation where one nurse would have looked after more than two babies,” said Masuku.
