Telkom starts retrenchment talks

Telkom intends retrenching at least 3,000 employees. A consultation process with organised labour as part of the section 189 process begins on Wednesday.

The company is planning to axe the employees from May. It cited a weak economy and declining performance of its fixed voice services for the retrenchments.

Some unions are calling for the board to be fired. They say it’s shown gross leadership failure over the last five years and a lack of strategic direction and planning. The CCMA will facilitate the process.
