Unions speak out against Telkom retrenchments

The telecoms company announced this week that it would be cutting 3,000 jobs. The Communication Workers Union says it wants a sit down with Telkom.

Communication Workers Union General Secretary, Aubrey Tshabalala said the reasons submitted for the proposed retrenchments are the same as the reasons given in 2015 when 7,800 employees lost their jobs.

Telkom cut 2,000 jobs in 2018 and reduced their permanent staff complement by 12.5%. The communications company has offered voluntary retrenchment packages since 2015.
