12 to 17-year olds will get a single dose of the two-dose Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
Health expert, Rudzani Muloiwa, says this is the right approach.
He says a single dose significantly reduces the risk of myocarditis.
“There are very good reasons for deciding to go with one dose as opposed to two doses. As you may very well have heard, the minister was speaking yesterday that there has been some evidence of myocarditis, which is the swelling of the heart muscles. That even though is short-lived, it is not a desirable side effect.”
Muloiwa is however concerned about the government’s approach to consent.
The Health Department said teens do not need parental consent to get the vaccine jab.
“If you know in South Africa, even with the termination of pregnancy the ones that are young as 12 years old can be able to ascent or even give consent for themselves to actually have a vaccine. I’m not sure in this case as public health, how far we need to go in respect to that. Certainly, older children have the right to refuse or accept treatment.”
