It was another successful trip to Cape Town for Kaizer Chiefs, who cruised to a 4-0 win over Stellenbosch to move 10 points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns. Following the weekend’s Telkom Knockout exit, Khama Billiat, Willard Katsande and Daniel Akpeyi returned to the Chiefs line-up while South African U23 star Siyabonga Ngezena earned a start as Erick Mathoho missed out through suspension.
Ngezana took his opportunity with both hands as he opened the scoring for the AmaKhosi on 10 minutes when he nodded home a corner from Lebogang Manyama. Chiefs’ dominance in open play was matched on dead-ball situation as the visitors doubled their in the 23rd minute through Samir Nurkovic’s header from yet another Manyama corner.
Unfortunately for Steve Barker’s charges, it was one-way traffic in the first half which left his star forward Waseem Isaacs isolated upfront against Daniel Cardoso and Ngezana. Ernst Middendorp was forced into a re-shuffle two minutes into the second half after Billiat appeared to have sustained a hamstring injury before making way for Dumisani Zuma.
After a long spells of frustration, Stellenbosch got their first real opening in the 70th minute of the encounter but Akepyi was well-positioned to deny Isaacs from a tight angle.
However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed with 15 minutes remaining as Nurkovic nodded home from close range to complete his brace after Zuma’s initial effort was saved by De Jong. There was enough time for a fourth goal in second-half stoppage time as Reeve Frosler picked out Zuma, who calmly slotted past De Jong to round off an emphatic win.
