Joburg mayor lays charges against some councillors

Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse has laid criminal charges against several ANC and EFF councillors.

The special sitting of the Johannesburg City Council was disrupted by protests and some coalition councillors suffered physical injuries when a special sitting of the City of Johannesburg council descended into chaos on Thursday.

Gauteng Cogta MEC Lebogang Maile has given the city speaker seven days to report back.

Maile has written a letter to speaker Vasco Da Gama requesting a report on the collapse of the council meeting.

He says the events were disturbing and have placed the city’s governance in peril.

De Gama explained what led to the disruption, “the meeting might have started peacefully in the beginning, but when it came to item 9, 4, and 5 [the] ANC didn’t want a particular item asked and few other councillors, because it was supposed to be dealt with in committee.”
