Big loss for family as rising soccer star killed by relative

Tshepo Zwane had a bright and promising future as an aspiring football star. He proudly carried the hopes and dreams of his family and the people in his village on his young shoulders.

But his brutal murder has ended his dreams and shattered the hopes of a community!

The 23-year-old from Dube Village in Soweto died on Sunday, 27 March, after an attack, allegedly by a relative known to the family, who stabbed him in the hand and the upper body.

Tshepo’s mum was also stabbed and injured.

His sister Sibongile Zwane (33) told the publication they were looking forward to seeing him playing for one of the professional teams.

“He was a mentor and role model to our children here at home, as well as those in the community,” she said. “I wish I could be woken up from this bad dream.”

Sibongile said the relative always told Tshepo he didn’t want him at the house and made some death threats.

On Sunday morning, after spending time with his older sister Matshidiso in New Canada just outside Soweto, Tshepo wanted to go home to check on his mum.

When he got there, he allegedly came across the relative. Sibongile said she heard there was an argument.

“The relative kept on saying he was going to kill him. Tshepo was outside the gate and the family
member was inside the house.

“My mum woke up to open the gate and there was an encounter. She called me. When I went outside, Tshepo’s hand was bleeding. Even my mum was bleeding and the relative had a knife,” she claimed.

Sibongile said when Tshepo tried to avoid his relative, he followed him. According to her, the relative stabbed Tshepo on the upper body before he left.

“Tshepo was our support structure,” she said. “The relative is just a bully. He was not only threatening Tshepo. He threatened everyone.”

She said Tshepo applied for protection orders on two occasions that only worked for a few months.

Sibongile said her brother played for many teams, including Black Poison and Ikageng, and was also selected to go for trials at the Nike Academy.

“He loved soccer and dogs and he danced. He was a people’s person. That is why the community is angry.”

Matshidiso said: “If it was possible for the death sentence to be brought back, I’d be very happy.”

Colonel Dimakatso Sello said they’ve arrested a suspect for murder.

The uncle Russell Zwane appeared in court on Tuesday, 29 March.
