Sinkhole in Benoni forces authorities to close the road due to safety concerns

A massive sinkhole on Snake Road in Ekurhuleni has forced authorities to close the road due to safety concerns. The sinkhole is approximately 4m deep and 10m wide.

Motorists have been urged to use the Tom Jones offramp towards Heidelberg or if travelling from the south to use Pioneer and turn right to Banyan street back to the N12.

The City of Ekhuruleni said the sinkhole could have been caused by the heavy downpour over the weekend combined with erosion caused by a broken large stormwater pipe. Officials are working on a way forward with the appropriate provincial departments.
