Shimeles Bekele announces retirement from the Ethiopian national team

Veteran player Shimeles Bekele has announced his retirement from the Ethiopian national team after 15 years representing his country. Today, I write this letter with a heart filled with mixed emotions. It is with a sense of pride and touch of saddness that I announce my retirement from the Ethiopian national team after a fulfilling 15-year journey,” Bekele wrote.

He has been the captain of the team in recent years and is the oldest player in the team. He guided the national team with his extensive experience. When the Ethiopian national team won matches against African giants Ivory coast and Egypt, he scored in both matches.

He was also a member of the team when the Walyas participated in the Afcon for the first time in 31 years. Together, we have experienced the spectrum of emotions from the challenges to the pinnacle of our collective efforts, qualifying for Afcon 2013. These memories are indelible and will remain with me always.

“As I close this chapter, I want you to know that my commitment to our national team remains steadfast. I may be retiring from play but my support for the team’s future endeavour is unwavering,” he added. Shimeles Bekele played 86 matches and scored 16 goals for the national team while adding 13 assists.
