Minister Radebe worried that Eskom continues to face serious challenges

Energy minister Jeff Radebe has conceded that Eskom continues to face serious capacity challenges with electricity supply.

Radebe made the comments at the DLO Africa Power conference in Sandton.

The power utility announced on Monday that the country won’t experience any load-shedding this week.

However, the parastatal warns things could change with no warning.

Radebe said Eskom cannot meet the country’s power capacity requirements on its own.

“We estimate that the capacity extension under the IRP will cost in excess of R1-trillion in the period up to 2030,” Radebe said.

“Including the new power plants plus the requisite transmission and distribution infrastructure.”

Radebe said a successful energy efficiency programme will not only result in job creation but will also help increase municipal revenue.
