Sergio Ramos Sets New All-Time Scoring Record

Sergio Ramos placed himself in the history books after scoring in Real Madrid’s 2-1 away win over Real Sociedad to become the highest-scoring defender in LaLiga history.

The Spain captain made the move from Sevilla to Los Blancos at the age of 19 years old in 2005 for a fee of £24.3 million (R524.3 million), and has developed into one of the most decorated players of the past decade.

The defender’s first Real goal came against Deportivo la Coruna, heading in from close range to open his account for the club. His 50th strike came in 2014, when he volleyed home a James Rodriguez corner against Rayo Vallecano.

Although he was brought to the Santiago Bernabeu as an adventurous right-back, the four-time UEFA Champions League winner was later moved to the centre of the backline for both club and country, and took on the penalty responsibilities at Los Blancos after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Hitting the 68-goal mark in LaLiga saw the 34-year-old leapfrog FC Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman, who had held the record for 25 years after leaving the Camp Nou is 1995.

According to Spanish publication AS, Ramos is at the top of a very illustrious list of some of the greatest defenders to grace the beautiful game, including former Real duo Roberto Carlos and Fernando Hierro, who scored 46 and 60 goals respectively.

However, soon after scoring the goal against Sociedad to achieve this record and help the Spanish giants overtake the Blaugrana at the summit of the Spanish top flight, Ramos suffered a knee injury and had to be substituted off.
