City of Cape Town calls on Ramaphosa to urgently address corruption within SAPS ranks

The City of Cape Town is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently tackle the growing scourge of corrupt officers within the South African Police Service.

This follows the theft of 15 firearms at Mitchells Plain police station two weeks ago.

The city believes some officers are conspiring with gangsters, leading to the disappearance of firearms at police stations.

In 2017, a station commander at the same police station was dismissed, following the theft of over 14 firearms.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin-Hill Lewis: “With more policing powers particularly the power for criminal investigation, we can get many more guns and gangsters off the streets for good. I also call on the president to announce a clear deadline for the National Rail Devolution strategy and for the handing over of passenger rail to the City of Cape Town.”
