Stun grenades fired at crowd during SAPS raid

Police were met by angry crowds as they raided the Stjwetla informal settlement near Sandton on Saturday night.

They were angry at the clampdown on public drinking and contact crimes in the area.

It was all part of Operation Shanela to secure the 15th BRICS Summit venue this week.

Police fired stun grenades to disperse crowds as bottles were thrown at them.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela says they’ll not surrender to lawlessness.

“Drinking in public remains an offense,” Mawela said.

“For them to can gather in this fashion, drink in public openly like that, it shows the high level of lawlessness.”
