SA records it’s highest number of new coronavirus infections in 24hrs

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Thursday 25 June, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 118 375. This is an increase of 6 579, as the total number of confirmed cases stood at 111 796 on Wednesday 24 June.

Mkhize announced an updated death toll of 2 292. This is an increase of 87 as it stood at 2 205 on Wednesday 24 June. The mortality rate is 1.9%.

“Regrettably we report a further 87 COVID-19 related deaths – two from Gauteng, 15 from KwaZulu-Natal, 17 from the Eastern Cape and 53 from the Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 2 292.”

“We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased,” he added.

The age groups 50-59 and 60-69 have accounted for 552 and 603 of the recent deaths respectively. According to Mkhize, 52.1% of the recent deaths were male and 47.9% were female.

A total of 1 460 012 tests have been conducted to date with 43 118 new tests reported. There have been 59 974 recoveries thus far which translates to a recovery rate of 50.7%.

LATEST COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY 25 JUNE
The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Thursday:

  • Eastern Cape – 20 487 cases
  • Free State – 976 cases;
  • Gauteng – 28 746 cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 6 590 cases;
  • Limpopo – 730 cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 783 cases;
  • North West – 2 965 cases;
  • Northern Cape – 318 cases; and
  • Western Cape – 56 780 cases
  • Unknown – 0 cases.
    This comes to a total of 118 375 confirmed cases.

COVID-19 DEATH TOLL BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY
The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Thursday:

  • Eastern Cape – 363 deaths;
  • Free State – nine deaths;
  • Gauteng – 149 deaths;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 106 deaths;
  • Limpopo – five deaths;
  • Mpumalanga – two deaths;
  • North West – five deaths;
  • Northern Cape – one death;
  • Western Cape – 1 652 deaths.

LATEST RECOVERIES BY PROVINCE
Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows:

  • Eastern Cape – 10 439 recoveries;
  • Free State – 318 recoveries;
  • Gauteng – 5 856 recoveries;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 2 947 recoveries;
  • Limpopo – 329 recoveries;
  • Mpumalanga – 207 recoveries;
  • North West – 291 recoveries;
  • Northern Cape – 112 recoveries; and
  • Western Cape – 39 475 recoveries.
