SA lockdown: Minister Ebrahim Patel faces court threat for the sale of cooked or pre-cooked foods

Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel has until Monday to lift the ban on the sale of prepared, warm and cooked food, or face legal action from business group Sakeliga. Sakeliga says it sent Patel a letter on Friday after receiving legal advice that there’s no lawful restriction. The group says while restaurant operations have been prohibited, no regulation disallows the sale of cooked or pre-cooked foods.

According to the group’s CEO Piet Le Roux, “it’s clear to most people that this lockdown cannot continue. What we want with this case is for the minister to reverse his pronouncements. The regulations placed no restrictions on what kind of food and how the food is prepared”.
