A 30-year-old woman went to the hospital for help but was allegedly s.e.xually abused and harassed by a doctor, instead.
The woman told the publication she was admitted on 22 July last year at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. She was suffering from lymphoma cancer.
She said the cancer had spread from her liver and to the chest and spinal cord.
According to her, she discovered she had cancer on 21 October 2020 and was bedridden for three months.
The harassment started in a ward cubicle and ended in a sonar room.
“The doctor came to me in the cubicle and closed the curtains,” she said.
“He told me to lie down on my stomach on the bed but then I felt his 4-5 pressing against my back.
“He took almost 10 minutes, exposing my body to his private parts while rubbing my spinal cord.”
He left and came back. He instructed her to follow him to a sonar room.
She said in the dark sonar room, “he started fondling my breasts and pressed his 4-5 against my right thigh”.
The woman said the doctor said she must not be embarrassed by what was happening.
He also wanted them to exchange contacts.
“The next day, he apologized to other patients for making them feel uncomfortable. He kneeled down in front of me and apologized for making me feel uncomfortable.”
The woman’s 54-year-old mother said: “I want justice for my daughter. My child is no longer comfortable when she is with men.”
EFF gender-based violence activist Susan Kirby said they want the doctor to be fired and not transferred.
Kabelo Theoga, a representative from #NotInMyName, said: “We are not happy that the doctor is still in the facility. We need the health department to intervene.”
Cops spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Sello said: “A case of s.e.xual harassment was opened for further investigation. No suspect has been arrested.”
Hospital spokesman Zwide Ndwandwe said: “The hospital is aware of the matter. The doctor concerned was put under precautionary transfer. The disciplinary process outcome was a dismissal, but the doctor appealed.
“The matter will be discussed on Monday (yesterday) when the CEO Dr Lucas Ndhlovu returns from leave.”
