A suspected taxi boss was shot dead in a brutal ambush on Malandela Road in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
The victim, identified as Mandla Dlamini from Lindelani, was travelling with his fiancée and another passenger when gunmen allegedly opened fire on his vehicle on Thursday, 9 July.
The attack quickly turned into a deadly scene.
After the shots rang out, Dlamini’s vehicle lost control, left the road and struck a pedestrian. The vehicle then landed in a ditch near a petrol station.
Another vehicle travelling nearby also veered off the road and ended up in the same ditch.
Dlamini died at the scene from gunshot wounds. Sadly, the pedestrian who was hit during the chaos also died at the scene. Dlamini’s fiancée and the passenger were injured.
Gunmen Open Fire From VW Polo
According to the report, the attackers were travelling in a VW Polo. They allegedly opened fire on Dlamini’s vehicle while he was driving along Malandela Road.
The shooting happened just before he reached a nearby shopping centre. Witnesses described a terrifying moment as several shots were fired in public.
One witness said the sound of gunfire made people believe that a cash-in-transit robbery could be happening. However, when people rushed closer, they found that Dlamini had been shot.
The witness also claimed that one of the attackers got out of the VW Polo and fired more shots at Dlamini.
That detail has added to the shock around the killing. It suggests the attackers were determined to make sure their target did not survive.
Fiancée and Passenger Escape to Petrol Station
The shooting did not only affect Dlamini. His fiancée and another passenger were also inside the vehicle when the gunmen struck.
After the attack, they reportedly managed to flee towards a nearby petrol station.
They survived, but they sustained injuries. Their survival may now become important to the police investigation.
They could help officers understand what happened before, during and after the ambush. However, the trauma of witnessing such a violent attack will likely stay with them for a long time.
Innocent Pedestrian Killed
The death of the pedestrian has made the case even more painful.
He was not the target of the attack. Instead, he appears to have been caught in the wrong place at the worst possible moment.
As Dlamini’s vehicle left the road during the shooting, it struck the man. Witnesses said he may have been walking towards the same shopping centre.
That part of the story has left the community heartbroken. A man who was simply walking in the area lost his life because of violence aimed at someone else.
It is a painful reminder that public shootings do not only kill their intended targets. They also place innocent people in danger.
Police Open Several Cases
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that KwaMashu police are investigating the incident.
Police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder and culpable homicide.
The murder case relates to Dlamini’s killing. The attempted murder case is linked to the injured passengers.
Meanwhile, the culpable homicide investigation relates to the pedestrian who died after being struck by the vehicle. Police said the motive for the attack remains unknown.
At this stage, no arrests have been confirmed. The search is now on for the suspects who fled after the shooting.
Taxi Violence Questions Return
Although police have not confirmed the motive, the killing has raised fresh concerns about violence linked to the taxi industry. KwaZulu-Natal has seen several taxi-related murders over the years.
In many cases, disputes over routes, money and control have turned deadly. However, every case must still be investigated properly.
Police will need to establish whether Dlamini’s killing was linked to the taxi industry, a personal dispute or another motive.
Until then, the community is left with fear and unanswered questions.
A Community Left Shaken
Malandela Road is a busy route. That makes the shooting even more frightening. When gunmen open fire in a public place, everyone nearby becomes a potential victim.
Drivers can lose control. Pedestrians can be hit. Families can be left grieving without warning.
This attack showed that clearly. One man was shot dead. Another man was killed after being struck by a vehicle.
Two other people were injured. As a result, one ambush has left several families dealing with pain.
Police Must Move Quickly
The pressure is now on police to trace the suspects. The VW Polo used in the attack will likely become a key part of the investigation.
Officers may also look for CCTV footage from nearby businesses, petrol stations and traffic cameras.
Witness statements could also help police build a clearer picture. However, the community will want quick progress.
When such killings happen in public, fear spreads fast. People want to know that the suspects will be found and that the streets are safe.
For now, KwaMashu is left mourning two lives lost in a violent attack that turned an ordinary day into tragedy. The motive remains unknown. But the damage is already clear.
