Some of South Africa’s biggest make celebrities are taking a stand against s-e-xual harassment. A spate of gender-based violence in South Africa has resulted in scores of women using hashtags like #AmINext and #MeToo to share their horrifying stories of abuse. J’Something, Nasty C, Kyle Deutsch, Siya Jentile, Thabiso Makhubela, Kagiso Rabada, Craig Lucas and Tino Chinyani are standing in solidarity with women.
They have joined forces with Cosmopolitan to create awareness about sexual harassment and hold men accountable for their actions.
The famous men feature in a video with comedian Lesego ‘Coconut Kelz’ Tlhabi that shows what an average day in the life of a woman looks like. The roles are reversed, with Coconut Kelz catcalling the men and touching them inappropriately in the workplace. The campaign was released just in time for ’16 Days of Activism. All the men have vowed to stand up against the everyday s-ex-ual harassment of women.
They have pledged to call out street harassment, call out verbal harassment and never be a bystander to potential abuse. The campaign encourages all men to make a similar promise. For every pledge/support received, COSMO will donate R1 to @HeForShe, a United Nations global solidarity movement, which champions a systematic approach for a gender-equal and non-violent world,” the magazine wrote on Instagram.
Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi launched her own #HeForShe campaign a few weeks ago
She called on South African men to stand with women in the fight against gender-based violence.
They wrote “love letters” to show their support. Some of the letters were inscribed on the ribbons of fabric used as part of the national costume Zozibini will wear to the Miss Universe pageant in December. This is such a beautiful message because instead of attacking each other, we’re asking each other to come together in love and to send love messages to South African women,” she said on Instagram.
