Gogo who uses crutches allegedly fired with rubber bullets by police

Gogo Mmina Morakeng claims police fired rubber bullets at her house after accusing her of encouraging children to protest and cause chaos.

The 63-year-old from Dinokana Village, near Zeerust in North West, said it was like something out of a movie when the cops arrived on Wednesday.

“They came with a police Nyala and told me I was encouraging nyaope boys to cause trouble in the village. Before I knew it, they were shooting at my house,” she said.

Gogo Mmina said she rushed into her house, but fell because she uses crutches.

“Even after I fell, they kept firing.”

The gogo told the SunTeam two of her windows were damaged.
Villagers continued with the protest yesterday.

They have been protesting over a lack of water for three months.

They said the municipality shut off their water without giving reasons. They said they had to pay a water truck to bring water.

A clinic and schools were closed by angry residents, who also blockaded the roads with branches and burning tyres. They claimed municipal officials closed the water on purpose to benefit from tenders.

Resident Dikeledi Moilwanyane said pupils could not go to school because there was no water.

“I don’t remember the last time I had a bath,” she said.

A car was set alight by residents, who also threw stones at police Nyalas and used slingshots to pelt them with stones.

Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality speaker Alfred Nyamane said the problem was that the engines pumping water out of boreholes were damaged.

He said a service provider had been appointed to fix the problem.

“We are pleading with residents to let children go back to school and stop protesting. The boreholes and engines will be fixed with immediate effect,” he said.

North West police spokeswoman Captain Adele Myburgh said cases of public violence and malicious damage to property were opened, but no arrests had been made.
