Residents fear the madala might die in the pile of trash in his yard. They said he eats rotten food from bins and collects rubbish he finds on the streets.
His neighbours said Samuel Mokuru (61) has stayed alone in his shack in Phomolong, Atteridgeville, Tshwane surrounded by rubbish that has been accumulating for years, but it is getting out of hand.
When residents called the Magau Community project, Emily Molokoane (52) went to the madala’s home.
“His home is filthy and smells of rotten chickens that are in buckets around the yard,” said Emily.
“This environment is not meant for anyone to live in.”

She said they want to clean this place so that he can stay in a healthy place, especially during the pandemic.”
She said the old man has an ID which will help in the process, but he doesn’t have any family members.
According to his neighbours, his wife and kids left him many years ago and he doesn’t know where they are.
Madala told the publication he’s collecting the rubbish for recycling.
“I just want to make money with all these things I’m collecting. It is just unfortunate that there isn’t anyone living with me,” he said.
“My feet hurt and now I can’t go around collecting rubbish anymore, otherwise I would be bringing other stuff to the house.”
Emily said they were asking SunReaders to help the madala.
“We’re asking anyone who can help with donations. Blankets, clothes, and even food will help,” she said.
