US House passes assault rifle ban

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill banning assault weapons.

The move was spurred by a series of deadly mass shootings.

The legislation was approved by a majority vote in the Democratic-majority House and now heads to Senate.

But it’s widely believed the Republican-led Senate is unlikely to pass it.

In May, a white supremacist shot dead 10 African Americans at a supermarket in Buffalo.

In July, 19 school children and two teachers were killed when a teenage gunman opened fire at a school in Uvalde.

In the same month, seven people were shot dead at a 4th of July parade in Highland Park.
