A Mpumalanga community’s dream of becoming homeowners has been shattered.
Residents of Uthingo Park in Emalahleni claim they’re being used as cash cows in a Presidential Housing Project which is meant to benefit them.
They say when they moved into their homes 15 years ago they were told 25 percent of the units would be for rent to buy.
But this didn’t happen and they’re now considering legal action.
Sipho Twala is one of several residents who occupy 1250 out of 5000 homes at Uthingo Park, meant to be for rent to buy, but he says they’ve been lied to.
“We were told that if you pay your rent well in the first year you will be given a chance to buy the unit, and then you will own it. I then applied and it was approved,” Twala said.
