South African rural towns could soon receive a boost

Some South African towns could soon receive a boost. A draft spatial development plan issued by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development is proposing that 61 towns receive priority support and government money but the benefits are only broadly defined.

The South African Council for Planners CEO, Martin Lewis said the plan was drafted by the Department to set a framework for investment to address problems of regional inequality and to make sure development is not isolated.

Lewis explained the benefits would be for different government departments to focus efforts within key areas of development and urged the public to read and comment on the plan.
