Inside the official launch of Radio 7441 FM – Photos

COMMUNITY station, Radio 7441 FM officially launched on Saturday, 13 November after holding off for months.

The station in Malmesbury, Western Cape was supposed to launch in July, but was stopped due to lockdown restrictions.

It was finally launched with the help of deputy minister in the presidency, Thembi Siweya.

Station manager Norman Mazibuko spoke to Daily Sun about the launch.

“We feel grateful and appreciated by the office of the president for sending the deputy minister to open our station. It took a long time to get here, and it felt like no one wanted to work with us,” he said.

“When we started the station, it was when the president declared the lockdown last March, and it has been tough since. So, to finally launch feels great. We as Radio 7441 FM are happy,” he said.

Mazibuko said the presence of the deputy minister brought a lot of people to the launch and they were grateful.

“Other radio stations and community leaders came to be part of the event. What makes us happy is how the minister humbled herself and went door to door, which has never happened in Malmesbury.

“She listened and spoke to the community. After that, she came to the launch and helped cut the ribbon. It was a great day,” he said.

The radio team spoke to the People’s Paper in September about needing financial assistance to keep their station open.

Mazibuko said they were still looking for help.

“People are helping, but we are looking for a sponsor and stakeholders. We’ve opened the doors for everyone to come and partner with us. That will help keep the station sustainable and bring in money. We have more than 75 000 people listening now and we want to capitalise on that.”
