Pretoria community in the dark

The community of Laudium outside Pretoria is threatening to take the City of Tshwane to court if electricity problems are not resolved.

Laudium has been without power since Tuesday, apparently due to an illegal municipal workers’ strike.

Other areas have been experiencing power outages, including parts of Pretoria North.

The City of Tshwane believes sabotage is to blame.

Meanwhile, The state of the country’s power-generating infrastructure is of concern.

According to Johannesburg MMC for Infrastructure Services, Michael Sun, it’s partially the reason for the spike in blackouts and power station failures.

A fire broke out at the JG Strydom switching substation in Roodepoort.

Sun says some infrastructure dates back to 1920.

He says the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
