President Cyril Ramaphosa says it is up to Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba to address the concerns of protesting Alexandra residents.
On Wednesday, angry demonstrators brought the township to a standstill and demanded that Mashaba to address them about illegal dwellings they say are mushrooming in the area.
“We don’t want a burning Alex, but we want finality to some of these issues. So as a responsible and responsive mayor, we expect him to be here and address the community then he can go about his business and continue solving the issues in the City of Johannesburg,” said ward councillor Tefo Raphadu.
Ramaphosa is echoing community members sentiments and urged local government to heed calls by the people.
“The people there are complaining about service delivery issues. They have been asking and pleading with the mayor to go and address them.
“They are complaining about the issue of houses being built on the roadside,” said Ramaphosa.
Meanwhile, Mashaba said he is always willing to meet residents and has challenged the president to name a time and place to join him.
