Port Elizabeth schools cry for help amid gang violence

Two Port Elizabeth primary schools are planning to approach the Human Rights Commission to investigate the effects of gangsterism in the city’s Northern Areas.

Three Strelitzia Primary School pupils have died in the past three years as a result of gang violence.

The school closed for two days last month following a shootout between rival gangs on school grounds.

“The police were contacted, they responded very well but still the shooting continued at one stage they settled down but then they turned shooting onto the police,” said Strelitzia Primary School Principal Clifton Jantjies.

Many were left traumatised after the incident.

The school’s pleas to the education department for tighter security have fallen on deaf ears and now they are looking elsewhere for assistance.

The school winter holidays are beginning but children in the area won’t be playing outside.

They are being kept safe from the turf wars playing out on the streets of their neighbourhood.
