Arrest us all or release our leaders! This was the message of Harare residents in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, who gathered outside the cop shop in the area, demanding the release of eight community leaders who were arrested for demolishing shacks.
The arrested leaders allegedly led residents to demolish the shacks of three rival community leaders who they accused of “blocking service delivery”.
After the leaders’ arrest, residents tried to storm the Harare cop shop demanding their release.
“Asiyi ndawo. They must arrest us. The shacks were not demolished by eight people, but the whole community. Why are they targeting a few people? They must arrest all of us. If they don’t do that, we are going to enter the cop shop and sit there until they arrest us,” said gatvol resident Vuyiseka Ngunase (40).
Another resident, Bathandwa Mabusela (42), said the community leaders whose shacks were demolished are accused of blocking the installation of electricity in the squatter camp in Ward 99.
“They are accused of being a stumbling block between the municipality and residents. One of them was leading in the previous ward committee, but his time lapsed, but he continues to speak to the municipal officials on behalf of residents,” said Bathandwa.
It’s alleged that the residents accused them of blocking service delivery, which then led to the demolition of their shacks.
It’s also alleged that the shacks belong to one male community leader and two female leaders.
Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg said: “Community members gathered outside Harare Police Station in protest of eight suspects who were arrested on charges of malicious damage to property.
“The suspects will make their court appearance once they’ve been charged.”
