Police sergeant gets 15 years in jail for robbing motorist R20K! A Limpopo police officer, Sergeant Nierush Seanego, has been sentenced to 15 years of direct imprisonment after being convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances. The Mokopane Regional Court handed down the sentence after a thorough trial, marking a significant victory in the fight against corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Seanego, 39, who was formerly attached to the Mahwelereng visible policing unit, was also convicted of defeating the ends of justice, according to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.
SAPS’ Commitment to Fighting Corruption
In a statement, Mashaba emphasized the SAPS’ zero-tolerance stance on corruption and praised law enforcement agencies for ensuring that justice was served.
“The South African Police Service in Limpopo remains unwavering in its mission to eradicate corruption within its ranks. This commitment has been reaffirmed by the successful conviction and sentencing of Sergeant Nierush Seanego,” he said.

The Crime and Arrest
The case against Seanego stemmed from an incident that took place on February 7, 2023.
- A complainant was stopped near Nyl Plaza by a marked police vehicle and a silver Toyota Yaris.
- Seanego and his accomplices forcibly removed the victim from their vehicle, searched them, and robbed them of R20,000 before fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, an intensive investigation was launched by the provincial anti-corruption unit in Limpopo, working closely with the Polokwane tactical response team.
- Law enforcement officers gathered substantial evidence linking Seanego to the crime.
- The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) issued a warrant of arrest.
- On March 4, 2024, Seanego was arrested at his homestead within the Mahwelereng policing precinct.

Trial and Conviction
After his arrest, Seanego was initially detained at Mokopane SAPS. However, he later secured bail after appealing to the High Court in Polokwane.
Despite his release on bail, the trial proceeded, and on March 10, 2025, the court found him guilty of all charges. In addition to his 15-year sentence, he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Praise for Law Enforcement
Limpopo provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, applauded the anti-corruption unit, Polokwane tactical response team, and the NPA for their dedicated efforts in bringing Seanego to justice.
“This conviction and sentencing will send a strong message that SAPS will not tolerate corruption within its ranks. We remain committed to upholding the integrity of our service and restoring public confidence in law enforcement,” said Hadebe.
The sentencing of Sergeant Seanego serves as a warning to corrupt officials that criminal activities within the police force will not go unpunished.

Restoring Public Trust in SAPS
The successful conviction highlights the SAPS’ commitment to holding its own accountable and ensuring that those entrusted with public safety do not abuse their power for personal gain.
For years, corruption within the police force has been a major concern for South Africans, with many questioning whether law enforcement officers can be trusted to protect citizens. Cases like this help restore faith in the justice system by proving that no one is above the law—not even those meant to enforce it.
Final Thoughts
Seanego’s conviction marks a major step in eradicating corruption within the SAPS and sends a strong message that officers who break the law will be held accountable.
As the police force continues its anti-corruption drive, more officers involved in criminal activities can expect to face serious consequences. This case serves as a clear warning: those who betray public trust will face the full force of the law.
