Two South African police officers have been convicted of murder in unrelated cases, highlighting concerns about police misconduct and violence.
Eastern Cape Officer Sentenced to 15 Years for Murder
A Sterkspruit police officer, Constable Amanda Masiso, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of murder.
Masiso, 34, was convicted for the fatal shooting of Thamsanqa Jamani, a 32-year-old man, in an alcohol-fueled argument on November 12, 2021.
According to Lizzy Suping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), Masiso and Jamani were drinking together at a local tavern when a heated dispute broke out at around 2 a.m.
Masiso later claimed that he found Jamani lying in a pool of blood in the street and then took him to the hospital.

However, Ipid’s investigation revealed a different reality—Masiso was, in fact, responsible for the shooting.
“The investigation revealed that indeed, Jamani was shot by Constable Masiso after they had the argument. The investigation further revealed that after shooting Jamani, Constable Masiso picked up the cartridges and threw them into a pit toilet,” said Suping.
Masiso was subsequently charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice.
After a trial, he was found guilty by the Sterkspruit Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
Western Cape Police Officer Found Guilty of Murder After Mass Shooting at Family Event
In a separate case, a Western Cape police officer, Constable Bonani Nkonzo, has been found guilty of murder after fatally shooting his wife’s sister and injuring nine others during a children’s party at his home.
The violent rampage occurred on October 28, 2018, at Nkonzo’s residence.
According to Suping, Nkonzo had returned home during a family gathering and became involved in a domestic dispute with his wife.
In a fit of rage, he pulled out his service firearm and began shooting indiscriminately, moving from room to room.
“He started shooting randomly while walking into each room. He fatally shot his wife’s sister and injured nine others, including a minor child who was just nine years old at the time,” said Suping.
His wife was also shot in the head but miraculously survived the attack.
Authorities were immediately notified, and police arrested Nkonzo the same day.
A thorough investigation was launched, leading to his conviction.
Nkonzo is set to be sentenced in the Western Cape High Court on March 5, 2025.
