Police crackdown on drunk drivers in stop-and-search operation

Operation “Okae Molao” rolled into Randfontein this weekend. Officers found over a dozen drunk drivers.

They were arrested and are likely to appear in court on Monday morning. Police and the Community Safety Department want to ensure communities stay within Level 1 rules.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela and MEC Faith Mazibuko conducted the stop-and-search process.

“In this roadblock, already more than 13 drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol,” Mawela said.

“We believe that people are still undermining the law. Mazibuko urged people to stick to COVID-19 safety regulations.

“It’s a clear demonstration that our citizens, they don’t listen when the president speaks to them,” Mazibuko said.

“We’ve picked up more than 15 people that were driving under the influence of alcohol. When you asking them some say from parties which means they are doing a lot of different things.”

Both police and the community safety department say they will continue with impromptu searches, making sure that everyone adheres to the safety regulations.
