Khobab Wind Farm achieved its Commercial Operations Date on schedule and on budget, as part of the third round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Khobab Wind Farm received support from the local municipality and surrounding communities during the construction phase and into operations. A number of economic development projects, aimed at contributing to sustainable community growth through financial and non-financial community development involvement. During the operations, a monetary commitment has been made to specifically developing enterprises and improving the socio-economic welfare of the community for 20 years.

Situated in the Hantam Municipal Area, 60km north of Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape, Khobab Wind Farm spans 3,453 hectares of agricultural land and comprises sixty-one 99m-high wind turbines.

When operating at full capacity, the 140MW Khobab Wind Farm generates around 563,500 MWh/year of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 120 000 South African homes.

The Assistant Plant Manager will report directly to the Plant Manager and the area of responsibility includes both Khobab and Loeriesfontein Windfarms. The candidate will have appropriate engineering skills, knowledge and experience on power systems and related plant.

Key responsibilities:

Liaising with Eskom to resolve issues that arise during operations.
Perform duties of GMR 16.2 appointee on plant during commercial operations.
Ensuring plant compliance in terms of South African legislation and regulations.
Ensuring high standards of health and safety are maintained on the sites.
Implementing Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) Policies, Standards and Procedures in Accordance to Legal and Statutory Requirements
Ensuring that the cause of turbine failures and electrical plant is understood (including and trends or serial defects that may be developing).
Liaising with the OEMs and other parties to ensure that response times are appropriate and works undertaken are carried out both safely and effectively and to specification.
Optimisation of the plant to ensure maximum levels of reliability and availability.
Supporting Plant Manager in analysing plant performance.
Preparing weekly and monthly reports as well as quarterly Board Packs.
Plan major maintenance works as required.
Maintaining calendar of servicing plans, weekly movements, statutory inspections etc.
Planning, budgeting and project management of upgrades on site.
Ensure that any potential asset optimisation measures are accurately prepared and presented.
Liaison with & reporting to General Manager when so requested.
Reviewing all current service/maintenance records and any issues identified.
Assist with facility control and operational switching when necessary. (Up to 132kV)
Assisting the Economic Development Team with the vetting of contractors and the process monitoring of activities.
Attending community meetings in the respective area as a representative of the wind energy facility when requested.
Integrate with other renewable energy companies in the area to ensure synergy, optimisation of resources and other opportunities of mutual benefit.

Key requirements for the role:

The position demands a highly organised approach and the ability to work with a small but closely-knit team. The Assistant Plant Manager may have to co-ordinate a number of operators and technicians, so must have appropriate management experience in the sector.

Experience and education:

Minimum 10 years relevant experience in power system related activities.
Ideally you will have a completed Engineering Diploma or equivalent.
ECSA registration will be an advantage.
Experienced in management of Health, Safety and Environment,
Excellent writing and reporting skills
Ability to work in a team environment is essential
Good communication and presentation skills
Good command of English essential, Afrikaans preferable.
Full, clean drivers licence.
Operating Regulations for High Voltage Systems.
Computer literate which includes all standard software packages.
