COVID-19 pandemic likely to hurt Pick n Pay margins

Pick n Pay says the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to hurt its margins this year because of restrictions on the sale of some items.

The retailer delivered full-year turnover growth of 4.7 per cent in a tough trading period. CEO Richard Brasher says the group performed well despite a strained year for the consumer, even before the COVID-19 outbreak.

But the retailer deferred its dividend payout for the year to conserve cash. Brasher says the sales ban on items including liquor, tobacco and clothing will have an impact going forward.
