SABC fires Head of News Phathiswa Magopeni

The SABC’s head of news, Phathiswa Magopeni, has been fired.

She was subjected to a disciplinary hearing in December after the airing of a Special Assignment episode that had been interdicted by a court order.

Advocate Nazeer Cassim chaired the hearing and recommended a warning for Magopeni.

The SABC says because she failed to provide mitigating factors in her defence, the relationship of trust has broken down.

The public broadcaster says Magopeni can appeal her dismissal at the CCMA or Labour Court.

Magopeni has alleged the board interfered in editorial matters.
