UKZN graduate Dumisani Ngobese’s Gogo details painful journey

Several years of struggles and hardship are now paying off.
This is what gogo Sindisiwe Ngema (63) from Empangeni, northern KZN, said after her grandson Dumisani Ngobese (23) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of KZN.
Gogo Sindisiwe told Daily Sun she is speechless, happy, humbled and proud of her grandson.
“This is indeed the highlight of my entire life because there has never been a graduate in my entire family,” she said.
She said although Dumisani used to tell her he will one day make her proud, she never thought it would happen this way.
Asked about the challenges she and Dumisani encountered when he was still in school, the former street vendor took a long a breath and said: “It wasn’t easy at all.”
She said things were really bad at home but Dumisani was determined to finish school and make a living for himself.
“He never followed his siblings when they caused trouble and didn’t want to go to school because he knew this is what he wanted. Today he has got it. I’m so grateful this happened while I’m still alive.”
