Outa predicts e-tolls will stay

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula is expected to announce the way forward on e-tolls.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) said the government hasn’t realized the toll it has taken on the public.

Outa’s Wayne Duvenage stated the organization does not believe the minister will announce the scrapping of the system.

Duvenage said the user-pay principle has not been effective so far and will not be effective going forward.

“If the public is not participating it’s not an efficient or effective user-pay scheme.”

“Government keeps saying user-pays is the most efficient and fairest way to fund these roads but we have said to the government that if that was the case then you wouldn’t have 20 percent compliance, you would have 90 percent compliance,” he said.
