Orlando Pirates suffers another defeat

Eager to appease for their MTN8 exit, Bucs started brightly when an early chance fell to Justin Shonga in the box but he shot straight at Darren Keet in the opening minutes.

Bidvest Wits made it three wins from three in the Absa Premiership after snatching a late 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates on Wednesday.

The early scare came from the visitors though as Xolani Machupu pounced on to a Deon Hotto ball to force Siyabonga Mpontshane to save for a corner on 11 minutes.

Bucs won a corner of their own on 20 minutes through Xola Mlambo’s long-range strike which forced Keet to tip over the bar.

After four minutes, momentum swung to the other spectrum as Gift Motupa’s shot on the turn rockets over the post failing to test Mpontshane.

Augustine Mulenga turned in the box but found himself surrounded by a cluster of defenders who blocked his path to goal, allowing Keet to collect easily on 32 minutes.

As halftime edged closer, Vincent Pule tried to put one over his former team but his shot from just inside the box guided to the side-netting.

An error from Sifiso Hlanti played Shonga through goal but the Zambian ace failed to profit after going one-on-one with Keet who pulled off a good save on 42 minutes.

Pirates made the first change at the start of the second half as Thamsanqa Gabuza replaced Mulenga, while the Sea Robbers threatened again with Pule’s effort denied by the woodwork on 53 minutes.

The first alternation for Wits saw Haashim Domingo replacing Terrence Dzvukamanja, who scored in the previous encounter against Kaizer Chiefs at the midway mark.

With both sides struggling to carve out openings, Wits went in front when Domingo’s low cross deflected off Gladwin Shitolo to trickle past Mpontshane on 80 minutes.

Pirates rushed for a quick way back, but Paseka Mako’s failure to keep a close-range effort on target was the closest the Soweto giants got to grabbing a point as the Students make it three from three.
