NPA to oversee Gupta-linked Optimum coal mine

The National Prosecuting Authority has won a preservation order for Optimum coal mine and terminal.

This means it will oversee the businesses under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, ahead of anticipated asset forfeiture proceedings.

This follows submissions earlier in March, including arguments drawn from work by the NPA’s Investigative Directorate.

Optimum coal mine and terminal are linked to the Gupta family and former president Jacob Zuma’s son, Duduzane Zuma, through their company, Tegeta.

The company has been in business rescue since early 2018.

It was on the brink of a sale when the NPA brought the preservation order case on an urgent basis.
