The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that one learner out of the 47 learners who were hospitalised for suspected food poisoning remains in hospital. Earlier it was reported that four of the learners were still in hospital however, three have since been discharged.
The learners from Rapelego Primary School in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, were hospitalised on Monday for suspected food poisoning. The department says the learners fell ill after eating chocolate sold by a Grade 7 learner, which had allegedly reached its expiration date.
The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona says, “The chocolates were taken by health officials to conduct necessary tests. They should be in a position to then share with all relevant authorities including parents the results of the chocolates. But we have dispatched our psycho-support team to go to the school especially tomorrow – now that most of them have been discharged – in the event that they come to school and they need to be supported.
