The attack has sent shockwaves through the Tembisa community and the greater Ekurhuleni region. Residents expressed grief and frustration over the escalating levels of crime and violence targeting both civilians and law enforcement in the area.
Makgato confirmed, “The two officers were from the EMPD Intervention Unit and were certified dead on the scene. The suspects robbed the officers of their firearms and escaped on foot. A nearby unknown getaway vehicle assisted them in fleeing the area.”
The brazen nature of the attack—targeting officers on duty—has raised urgent questions about the safety of law enforcement personnel and the readiness of criminal syndicates to confront armed police officers.
Rising Crime in Tembisa Demands Urgent Response
The incident has reignited debate around crime in Tembisa, a densely populated township known for both its vibrant community and persistent criminal challenges. While Tembisa has seen several development projects and safety campaigns over the years, law enforcement continues to face major obstacles in maintaining peace and order.
Criminals targeting law enforcement officers mark a dangerous escalation in violent crime, and such incidents threaten the morale of police personnel while creating a climate of fear among residents. The loss of the two EMPD officers, who were dedicated to protecting the community, underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures, community policing, and resource allocation to combat crime in Tembisa.

Investigations Underway as Police Hunt for Killers
Authorities have launched an intensive investigation to track down the perpetrators responsible for the double murder. Law enforcement agencies are calling on community members to come forward with any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has taken over the case and is working closely with EMPD’s internal investigation unit to leave no stone unturned. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes is being reviewed, and a forensic team has combed the crime scene for evidence.
“An attack on police is an attack on the state,” said Mathe. “We will ensure that those responsible face the full might of the law. We appeal to the public, especially in Tembisa, to assist us with any information, no matter how small it may seem.”
Since the news broke, tributes have poured in from fellow officers, government officials, and ordinary South Africans. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi condemned the killings and promised that the provincial government would work closely with law enforcement to address the rising crime wave in areas like Tembisa.
“These officers were not just members of the EMPD—they were fathers, brothers, and sons. Their lives were cut short by cowards who must be brought to justice. We stand with their families in this time of grief,” Lesufi said.
The City of Ekurhuleni is reportedly arranging official memorial services for the two fallen officers, whose names have not yet been released pending family notifications.
Community Urged to Unite Against Crime in Tembisa
As investigations continue, civic leaders are calling on the Tembisa community to rally against crime and work in collaboration with police. Community policing forums (CPFs), neighborhood watches, and outreach programs are being reinvigorated to build trust and strengthen safety in the area.
Crime analysts warn that the killing of uniformed officers may embolden other criminal elements if swift justice is not served. Strengthening law enforcement visibility, intelligence gathering, and community cooperation will be crucial to restoring order and deterring further violence in Tembisa.
