MPs praise Sars for R123 billion increase in net revenue collection

Members of Parliament (MPs) have praised the South African Revenue Service (Sars) for its annual performance that saw a R123 billion increase in net revenue collection.

Sars commissioner Edward Kieswetter told Parliament’s standing committee on finance that they managed to collect a total of R1.6 trillion in net revenue – or a 7.8% increase compared with the 2021/22 financial year.

Kieswetter and Sars briefed the committee about the entities annual performance plan on Wednesday.

Sars told Parliament that the year under review saw an increase not just in revenue collection, but in the number of refunds paid out to taxpayers.

Kieswetter said the increase in revenue was one of their performance highlights.

“Net revenue… last year [2022] we increased net revenue by R123 billion to R1.678 trillion.”

Committee members were quick to commend Sars for its performance, which also saw an increase in VAT refunds.

“It is pleasing to see the progress that Sars is making. I think it is one of our institutions that is very important to our economy and is contributing in a positive way,” said the Democratic Alliance’s Dion George.

United Democratic Movement MP, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa said he was pleased to see the improvement but slammed Sars for being “elitist” in how it treats taxpayers from underprivileged and rural areas.
