Emergency authorities have shared harrowing details about a multi-vehicle accident that took place in the early hours of Saturday morning on the N3 South in Pietermaritzburg.
Authorities are still clearing the scene of a horrific accident.
At least 16 people have lost their lives, while a dozen more have been injured.
The road is open, but officials are asking for patience due to slow traffic.
