Mzansi Celebs demand answers from President Ramaphosa

On behalf of the SA Guild of Actors, Jack Devnarain has shared a video demanding answers from President Cyril Ramaphosa on when the Performers Protection Amendment Bill will be signed. Veteran actors including Florence Masebe took the plight of actors being exploited to parliament last year, however the bill is yet to be signed by the president.

In a video shared on Instagram, Jack publicly posed the question to the president. People are delighted by the notion of international production companies coming to SA to celebrate our creative talent and showcase our acting skills on a global stage,” Jack began.

He then went on to tell the story of Sarah Baartman, a Koi woman who was displayed in Europe in the 19th century
Sarah’s plight to be free resonated with actors who want to be free from the shackles of big production houses.

“Let’s also ask about the injustices in our creative economy and why is it that in 2019 SA actors still can’t earn royalties or be protected against unfair exploitation?” Jack questioned.
