The family of a 22-year-old mother who was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend say she was murdered while on her way to a local hospital to get a medical report following an assault by her alleged attacker.
Grace Mudau was killed on Saturday at Ha-Mutsha-Kwekwe village, outside Thohoyandou, the same day she opened a case of assault against her alleged killer after she came home with bruises.
The family said the police allegedly told her to get a medical report from Tshilidzi Provincial Hospital before they could open the case.
Grace’s mother Doreen Kgaudi, 51, told Sowetan that the police visited her house on Saturday morning and advised her daughter to go to the hospital to get a medical report as part of evidence.
“She used my phone to call the police and when they arrived, they told us she should go the hospital. During the day, she told me that she was going to the hospital to get the report because the ex-boyfriend is threatening to kill her,” she said.
Kgaudi said later on, she tried calling Mudau to check progress on her trip to the hospital, but her phone was answered up by her friend.
“I became very worried and started asking around the village until I met someone who told me that there is a woman lying dead in some yard. When I got there I was shocked to find my daughter’s body. She was [email protected] with multiple stab wounds in her ex-boyfriend’s yard,” she said.
Mudau and the suspect have a year-old daughter.
Kgaudi said her daughter did not make it to the local hospital after the suspect blocked her way.
“I don’t know how he knew she was going to the hospital, but people say they saw him dragging her to his house,” she said.
Kgaudi said Mudau’s nightmare started when her baby’s father followed her to a local tavern where she was enjoying herself with her new boyfriend on Friday night.
“She told me that he assaulted her hence she was opening a case. It is not for the first time he beat her up and force her to be with him.”
She said she wants to know why he killed her daughter and leave her with the burden of raising the child.
Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the suspect has been arrested and will appear in court today.
Mojapelo said they will establish the facts around the assault case.
When Sowetan visited the deceased’s home yesterday, community members were streaming to extend their condolences.
Mudau’s elder sister Matodzi Mudau, 24, said her younger sister told her that she had ended her relationship with her daughter’s father a year ago.
Matodzi described her sister as someone who was calm and loving.
“She loved her daughter so much. Now that she is no more, we will raise the child and we will tell her that her mother was killed by her father.”
