Mpumalanga MEC celebrates October Transport Month in style

Gillion Mashego was accompanied by Buscor’s executive chairwoman, Norah Fakude-Nkuna. Mpumalanga Transport MEC Gillion Mashego launched October Transport Month by catching a bus from Nelspruit to Mkhuhlu on Friday.

They spoke to commuters about the problems they faced when using buses. Commuters complained that the buses sometimes arrived late.

They also told the MEC about overloading. Mashego said he will visit bus operators in the province. “We will visit all six bus operators in the province unannounced. The aim is to assess the conditions of their buses.

“We will also assess the overall service they provide to the public.” A commuter said: “Buscor should consider shifting boarding times and adding routes so that passengers are not forced to walk long distances to the bus stop.

“We still feel safe in Buscor buses and we commend their good service. “But we would be happy if they could attend to the issue of boarding times and added more routes.”

The bus company handed over 10 houses to poor families on the day. Mashego praised the company for helping the families.

“If all companies were to make such gestures, they could completely tackle poverty, inequality and unemployment.”
