SA-based duo named in Mozambique squad for Afcon

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson and Polokwane City midfielder Kambala have both been include in a preliminary squad of 46 players name by Mozambique for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast.

The squad will be trimmed to 27 by January 3 with both likely to make the final cut, along with former Premier Soccer League Player of the Season Domingues (Elias Pelembe). Now 40-years-old, Dominguez left Royal AM last season to return to Mozambique where he played at UD Songo over the last six months.

The squad also includes former Ajax Cape Town winger Telinho and Tanzania-based Luis Miquissone, who Mamelodi Sundowns previously signed but never fielded.

There are 24 home-based players in the squad, who have already began preparations for the tournament. The Mambas have scheduled a series of training matches over the next fortnight, including against Eswatini as well as provincial teams inside Mozambique.

Coach Chiquinho Conde said he was concerned about keeping the players match fit as the Mozambican season finished at the end of November.

Mozambique play their first Group B game against Egypt in Abidjan on January 14. They are also up against the Cape Verde Islands and Ghana in their group.
