Bafana Bafana’s Afcon 2025 dream may be over, but they exited the tournament with heads held high after a spirited 2-1 defeat to Cameroon on a rain-soaked night in Rabat.
South Africa pushed the Indomitable Lions to the limit in a gripping, emotional contest that could have swung either way. When the final whistle sounded, Cameroonian supporters flooded the streets in yellow, red and green, singing long into the night in celebration of their team’s hard-fought victory.
For Bafana, however, it was a painful yet proud moment.
Hugo Broos’ side burst out of the blocks, unsettling their former coach’s old team early on. Lyle Foster and Relebohile Mofokeng both went close in the opening stages as Cameroon struggled to find their rhythm.
The turning point arrived in the 34th minute when a poorly cleared corner caused chaos in the Bafana penalty area. After a scramble of deflections, Junior Tchamadeu reacted quickest to fire home from close range. A lengthy VAR review followed, but the goal stood.
Cameroon struck again just minutes after the restart. A dangerous delivery from the left was met by young striker Christian Kofane, whose glancing header beat Ronwen Williams to double the lead.
Many expected Bafana to fold, but they showed real character. Williams produced crucial saves to keep South Africa alive, while Devis Epassy was tested at the other end as Broos urged his men forward.
Hope arrived late when Evidence Makgopa bundled the ball home with two minutes remaining, setting up a tense finish. Deep into stoppage time, Makgopa came agonisingly close to equalising, only to see his effort drift wide.
That miss sealed Bafana’s fate. Cameroon advanced to a quarter-final showdown with hosts Morocco, while South Africa bowed out — exhausted, heartbroken, but proud after a courageous display against one of Africa’s giants.
