Post Office ready for Sassa payments: Ministers

Social Development Minister Susan Shabangu and Telecommunications Minister Siyabonga Cwele say the Post Office will be fully ready to take over social grants at the end of the month.

At a briefing on Friday, the ministers assured beneficiaries that there’ll be no more dilly-dallying.

Officials say they’ll be ready in time for the transfer of social grants to the Post Office.

READ: Sassa, former acting CEO to pay court costs over CPS contract

Earlier this year, the Constitutional Court was forced to extend an unlawful contract with Cash Paymaster Service after officials failed to meet a deadline.

The Constitutional Court on Thursday ordered Sassa and its then-acting CEO Pearl Bhengu to cover the costs of an urgent application to extend the agency’s unlawful contract with Cash Paymaster Services.
he Social Development Department says over five million beneficiaries have already been transferred.

“So far we have swapped about 5.5 million people from the CPS to the post office,” said Shabangu.

The postal services ministry has backed this up – saying the Post Office is just busy with minor touch-ups to its system.

Both the Post Office and Sassa have tried to allay fears about possible fraud and other crimes.

And of course there was the question of the Constitutional Court ruling which exonerated former Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini from paying any costs.

Shabangu says government welcomes any ruling handed down by the courts.
