Minister Nzimande condemns racism at places of learning in wake of Wilgenhof report

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation Blade Nzimande has again condemned racism at places of learning after welcoming a recommendation for Stellenbosch University’s controversial Wilgenhof residence to be closed down.

Nzimande welcomed a report compiled by a three-member panel appointed to investigate the discovery of disturbing items related to alleged institutional racism and initiation practices at the residence in January this year.

The minister then requested the university to give him a report on the outcome of the investigation.

Nzimande’s spokesperson, Veli Mbele, said that Nzimande would now study the report before addressing the steps taken by the university.

“The minister wishes to condemn racially inclined practices at places of learning once again strongly. Such racist and discriminatory practices or cultures have no place in a free and democratic South Africa.”
