A memorial service for Katlego Bereng, whose body was found in Thabo Bester’s cell will be held on Thursday.
DNA has confirmed the charred remains found in cell 35 at the Mangaung prison belongs to him. Bereng’s body is believed to have been used as a decoy for Bester to escape from prison in May 2022.
Bester and his girlfriend, Dr Nandipha, and former G4S security personnel allegedly helped him break out. To date, 8 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Bereng’s family has laid charges against the state and G4S and say they will not rest until they get justice.
